Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Ulaanbaatar city tour

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar. On arrival, you are welcomed by a representative from Enjoy Mongolia Travel and are transferred to your hotel. City sightseeing tour including a visit Central square, where all central departments including Government house and Chinggis khaan’s statue situated on. Visit to Gandantegchilen monastery. Panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar city is available from the Zaisan Hill War Memorial. Next to the memorial, there is a Buddha garden and statue. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 2 Flight to Ulgii city, Western Mongolia

Early morning we fly to Ulgii city, Bayn-Ulgii province. Visit to local museum and drive to the west of Ulgii.  Camping and sleep in tents.

Day 3 Altai Tavan Bogd National National Park

Drive further and we will arrive at Shiveet Hairhan Mountain, in Altai Tavanbogd National Park, where numerous Tuvan people live. Shiveet Hairhan is holy for them, so there is no hunting, and usually possible to see a lot of Altai Ibex in the early morning. Camping and sleep in tents.

Day 4 Altai Tavan Bogd

With the support of camels, we will trek for 16km to the base camp area at the edge of the Potanina glacier. We will camp and set up our tents here. Tavanbogd means "The Holy Five" referring to the peaks of Huiten (4374m the highest), Naran, Ulgii, Burged and Nairamdal. Sleep here at tent.

Day 5 Climb to Malchin Mountain

After breakfast, Climb to snow capped Malchin Mountain (4021 m the highest). After returned to the base camp we can explore the glacier area. Overnight in tents.

Day 6-7 Altai Tavan Bogd

Trek back on the other side of the Tsaagan River (White River) to Shiveet Hairhan Mountain, where the
Tuva people live. Here we will now be able to view the biggest petrolgyphs from the period of the Huns.

Day 8-9 Across Altai Mountains

We will allocate two days to cross the Altai Mountains range which is a total of 32km. You will be able to see remote and spectacular country from 3600m high. Today we will cross very near the peak of Tsaagan Hairhan Uul. This is the habitat of the Snow Leopard and its prey species the Siberian Ibex, as well as the rare Altai Snowcock. Camping. We will stay one more night in the same place and make day hike in Bear Valley.

Day 10-11 Drive back to Ulgii

Drive down through steppe valley along the river that drains from the Altai Tavanbogd massif creating a series of beautiful lakes. In this area, there will still be some Kazakh herdsmen to visit. Their yurts are a bonanza on handicrafts, and they are very friendly and hospitable people. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 12 Flight to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast will have a flight back to Ulaanbaatar. You may choose an optional city tour where you will be taken to souvenir and cashmere shops before enjoying an evening concert of National Folklore. In the evening we will talk about the Altai trek during a farewell dinner. Overnight in hotel.

Day 13 Visit to Chinggis Statue Complex

Drive to Chinggis Khaan’s Statue Complex. Evening folk art concert. Overnight in hotel.

Day 14 Departure

 

Tour length: 13 nights and 14 days.
Tour description: The feature of this program isto introduce western Mongolian life and environment and introduce khazah people life. We will supported by local 4wd vehicles. It is usually very stable weather patterns this time of the year, with blue skies. However any change to the worse will be dramatic and you should be prepared for a snow storm at the worst. During the journey we will make short hikes, sometimes supported by camels and horses. Camels are used to reach the Potanina glacier.

Day 2 Fligh to Khovd

Fly to the Khovd city. (two and a half hour flight). Visit the monuments of Galdanboshigt Khaan and Ard Ayush. Visit the local Museum which includes some rare artifacts such as ethnic clothes, rare stones, stuffed animals, photos and exhibitions of Manchu. Overnight in hotel. 

Day 2-4 Khar Us Nuur National Park

We have 1 days of explorations for Khar Us Nuur National Park. The largest of the lakes is Khar Us Nuur (Black Water Lake). We will try local hospitality at Jargalant Hairhan Mountain and hike into Rashantiin Am (Spring Valley), a sacred valley. Here is a sacred spring which is being said to have medicinal properties, including good for eye diseases Jargalant Hairhan is a snow-capped mountain, which is the back drop of Khar Us Lake. We will visit the families. It is possible we can also visit Chandman soum, where they claim throat singing originates. On the last day we will drive to and arrive at Tsambagarav snow-capped mountain area and pitch camp at Tavan Belchir (five pastures). We will view the glaciers here and meet some nomadic families. Overnight in tent.

Day 5-6 To Tsambagarav National Park

We will drive around this national park and have our picnic lunch by the small crystal clear lakes by Tsast Mountain. Both Tsambagarav and Tsast are eternally snow-capped peaks. Overnight  in tents. 

Day 7 Ulgii city

Drive to Ulgii, the small town which is the “capital” of Bayan-Ulgii province, which has many ethnic minorities, but predominantly Kazakh. Kazakhs, unlike the buddhist Mongols are muslims, and speak a Turkic language. There are some hidden handicraft shops. There is a recently refurbished mosque instead of a monastery, and there is a bazaar instead of a market. Overnigh in hotel.  

Day 8 Drive to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

We will drive further west. Bayan-Ulgii is rich in archaeological remains, as a reminder of the Bronze Ages and the time of the Huns and Turkic invasions. At Shiveet Hairhan Mountain, where numerous Tuvan nomads live, in Altai Tavanbogd National Park, we will pitch our camp. Shiveet Hairhan is holy for them, so there are about 400 Ibexes there. Sometimes seen, sometimes not seen. Overnight in tents.

Day 9-10 Potanina Glacier and Altai Tavan Bogd Peaks

We will do hikes in the area. In the mountains here, there are some 20 glaciers and this is one of the few locations in the world where camels are used as pack animals in glacier areas. Should weather conditions be difficult we will not be able to see the glaciers.  Tavanbogd means “the Holy Five” referring to the five highest peaks, of which Huiten Uul is the highest in Mongolia, 4374 meters above sea level. Quite a considerable height at this latitude.

Day 11 Altai Tavanbogd

Trek back on the other side of the Tsagaan River (White River) to Shiveet Hairhan Mountain, where the Tuva people live. Here we will now be able to view the biggest petrolgyphs from the period of the Huns (approx 200 B.C.).  The Huns were the reason for the Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huangdi to build the Great Wall of China.

Day 12 Ulgii city

Drive a short day to Ulgii town. Overnight in hotel. (Canat’s Ger Camp/BLD)

Day 13 Ulaanbaatar

Visit the most interesting local museum of Ulgii, with comprehensive information of flora and fauna of Bayan-Ulgii as well as it colourful traditional costumes. Visit a handicraft shop. Flight to Ulaanbaatar.

Day 14 Departure

Day 1 Ulaanbaatar city tour

Arrival in Ulaanbaatar. On arrival, you are welcomed by Enjoy Mongolia’s representative and are transferred to your hotel. City sightseeing tour including a visit Central square, where all central departments including Government house and Chinggis khaan’s statue situated on. The next things to see will be Mongolian National Museum (or please choose from the other museums). On to Goyo cashmere shopping centre and the Zaisan Hill War Memorial to get bearings with a panoramic view of the whole city. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2 Kharakhorum city

We will leave early from Ulaanbaatar to Khogno Tarni Monastery, Elsen tasarkhai sand dunes, and the ancient Mongolian capital city Kharakhorum. We will stay in a tourist camp or will camp on the bank of Orkhin river.

Day 3 Tsetserleg town

After breakfast we will visit to Erdenezuu Monastery and turtle rock. Drive to Tsetserleg town. Stay in a hotel and visit to the Museum of Arkhangai aimag. Overnight in the hotel. 

Day 4 Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake NP         

Drive to Taikhar rock which contains a lot of ancient inscriptions. Drive towards Chuluut river, beautiful canyon and Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake National Park. We will stay a horse riding camp.

Day 5 Horse riding 

After breakfast, our horseback trip will start. The tour will start from and go along the shore of the Terkhiin Tsagaan lake until we reach its head where head where “Man” rock can be seen. Will camp on the south shore of Khuduu lake. Today we will ride for 28 km.

Day 6 Horse riding
    
The tour will continue along the north Terkh river and go around the Bayasgalan mountain where we will pass the Bayasgalan rural subdistrict. We will camp there for night (33 km).

Day 7 Horse riding

We will go up the valley of the south Terkh river and pass Khangai sum, go along the north Ekh (Mother) river and arrive at the Noyon Khangai hot springs where you can have a well earned rest (34 km).

Day 8 Horse riding

Return the way we came and on to Jargalant mountain where we will camp (32 km)

Day 9 Horse riding

Climb over the Jargalant mountain and stop for lunch around the Khunt (swam) and Noot lakes. Then on past the Tsagaan Nuur rural subdistrict and arrive at the Tsagaan Lake where we will spend the night (33 km) 
Day 10 Horse riding

Go along the shore of the Terkhiin tsagaan lake and arrive to the Tariat sum (31 km)

Day 11 Drive back

Drive back to Tetserleg town. We will stay a hotel, free time.

Day 12 Ogii Lake National Park

Drive to Ogii Lake National Park which holds a lot of fish and birds. We will camp on the shore of Ogii Lake.

Day 13 Ulaanbaatar city

Drive towards UB. Stay a hotel. Have a dinner restaurant and see Mongolian national performance. Overnight the hotel.

Day 14 Departure

Day 2 Flight to Khovd
Breakfast at early morning. Fly to the Khovd (two and a half hour flight). Visit the monuments of Galdanboshigt Khaan and Ard Ayush. Drive to the old wall of the Manchu. Visit the local Museum which includes some rare artifacts such as ethnic clothes, rare stones, stuffed animals, photos and exhibitions of Manchu. On to Khar Us lake, the Ishgen tolgoin (kid hill) rock painting. We will get there in 3 hours including a stop for photo. From there, Khoid Tsenkher Cave. We will camp here and have dinner. Overnight in tents.

Day 3 Munkhhairkhan soum
We drive to Munkhhairkhan soum center passing through a deep canyon. On the way we will visit to herder families. We will travel for 70 km through wide steppe and high steep canyons and pass high mountain pass. We will have lunch on the bank of Tsenkher river where Munkhhairhan soum centre is located. After lunch, we will drive to Shuurkhai Lake which is a high altitude lake surrounded by beautiful scenery. We will camp on the shore of the lake. It is our base camp. Visit to local family. Overnight in tents.

Day 4 Explore area around the mountain
We will have short walking and discover the area, see where we will have long walking and do climbing. Take the snow capped mountain photos from the distance. We will back to tents and prepare for 2 days walking and also climbing. Free time. Overnight in tents.

Day 5 Trekking
We will start our walking and travel shuurkhai river and arrive in a beautiful waterfall. Then we will pass a steep mountain pass. Unforgettable scenery! We will have picnic lunch. Then walk down to Doloon Nuuriin River. Camp there. Today we will walk for 20 km. Rest. Overnight in tents. Vehicles with our luggage will go another way and be waiting for us there.

Day 6 Trekking   
We will across the Doloon Nuuriin river and just little walk up and set our tents. It is our high camp place. Have energetic lunch and rest and keep warm in tents. We will have dinner earlier today and prepare foods and drinks for tomorrow climbing. Check climbing equipments. Go to bed early.

Day 7 Climb to the summit of Munkhhairhan
Today we will get up at 3 am and feed ourselves. Then we will start climbing at 4 am. From the high camp until the snow edge, we will walk about 5 hours because it is quite hard and there are many big stones in the mountain side. From the snow edge we will climb to the summit about 3 hours. It is Mongolia’s second highest mountain. Down to high camp. We will be back around 4 pm. Rest.

Day 8 Back to the base camp
Down to the base camp or where the vehicles are. Today is free day. You can do whatever you like. Walk through wilderness, take photos, visit to local family, riding and learning everyday life.

Day 9 Back to Khovd city
Drive back to the Khovd city. Afternoon, rest time.

Day 10 Drive to Ulgii
Drive to Ulgii city where Khazah people live. On the way we will see Tsambagarav snow capped mountain. Afternoon we will visit to local museum. Overnight in hotel.

Day 11 Meet Eaglehunter
We will go to eaglehunters place and meet khazak family. Afternoon free time to shop some handcrafts and explore the area.

Day 12 Flight to Ulaanbaatar
Flight to Ulaanbaatar. Overnight in hotel. 

Day 13 Chinggis Statue Complex
We drive to Chinggis Khaan’s Statue Complex. Then go to “13th Century” camp. Folk art concert. Overnight in hotel.  

Day 14 Departure.

 

Eagle festival and Altai Tavan Bogd National Park


Key destination: Western Mongolia, Bayan-Ulgii province, Kazakh people, eagle hunters, horse riding, Kazakh culture

28th Sept.   Fly to Ulgii and Drive to Blue Goat Nat.Park 
Transfer to the airport .Domestic flight (4hrs) to Bayan-Ölgii [1/2 hour refuel stop in Tosontsengel or Moron] On arrival met by local kazakh guide.Drive to town.  After lunch, drive towards south (5-6 hrs) about 200km.We will have view to the beautifull  and remote country.We visit one of the local Kazakh nomadic families and stay there for few days.

29th -1st Oct.   Blue Goat National Park
Every day going with local horse rangers by the wild big remote mountains of Blue Goat Nat.Park, we can watch some Argalis,Ibexs and deers. This place has many wild endangerous animals and birds  like snowleopard, Altai argali and Ibex,lynx,wolfrine and bearded volchure,black volchure,different kinds of falcons,golden eagle, and others.We have the chance to visit some Kazakh families and feel the grade hospitalities.Also you will see how Kazakh women make the handycrafts.

2nd Oct.   Drive to Bayan Nuur
Full day drive about 5-6 hrs and reach the one of Kazakh eaglehunter’s family.On the way we stop near Lake Tolbo,which is one of crystal clear great lakes of Mongolia Altai.

3rd -5th Oct.   Go to Festival with Eaglehunters on horseback
Riding the mongolian small but tough horses,you go side by side with eaglehunter to hunt fox,rabbit,wild cat and may be wolf.So you have chance to have part in this unique hunting of Altai Kazakh people.Have picnic lunch on the mountian and enjoy remote mountian country.You can try to hold the golden eagle on your hand and in photo.

6th -7th Oct. Golden Eagle Festival
Meet the Kazakh Eaglehunters.The rodeo of eaglehunting.A fantastic opportunity for photographers and adventurers alike to see these magnificent birds up close.There are approx.400 eaglehunters in Bayan-Ulgii aimag.eaglehunters from around regions gather to test their finely trained birds in singular contests of speed and agility in these few days.During the festival we also see some Kazakh Traditional Horse Games  like “BushKushi”(Try to take out from each other the goat skin on horseback),”Kiss woman on horseback”,”Pick up coins from the land on horseback” and others.In the evening we enjoy to have the Kazakh Concert with some traditional songs and music.

8th Oct. Drive to Altai Tavan Bogd Nat.Park

9th-10th Oct.  Potanina Glacier and Altai Tavan Bogd Peaks
We will do hikes in the area. In the mountains here, there are some 20 glaciers and this is one of the few locations in the world where camels are used as pack animals in glacier areas. Should weather conditions be difficult we will not be able to see the glaciers.  Tavanbogd means “the Holy Five” referring to the five highest peaks, of which Huiten Uul is the highest in Mongolia, 4374 meters above sea level. Quite a considerable height at this latitude.

11th Oct.  Back to Ulgii
Trek back on the other side of the Tsagaan River. Drive back to Ulgii

12th Oct. Fly To UB
Transfer to the airport and fly to UB approx.4 hrs.
